Summary: Good Printer
Comment: Great printer for the price. I got it for $[...] one day on Amazon. Followed directions for the
wireless on a Mac using 10.5 using the cable first and the wireless was set up in under 10 minutes.
The starter toner is a rip off and I tried the tape over the windows and it worked great. Whoever
figured that out is a genius.

Don't forget to get an extra toner cartridge after a
few months just in case. Here is the link.

Summary: Very Good Printer, Setup isn't that bad
Comment: I was looking for an inexpensive B&W laser printer because I was tired of replacing ink jet
cartridges and printing out things in color that didn't need to be in color (like boarding passes,
coupons, etc.).
I wanted something that could print out documents, text, etc. in a quick and
easy manner and decided to buy this printer (2170W).

I had read some reviews
complaining about the wireless setup but decided to ignore them and get the printer. The manual was
fairly lengthy which turned me off at first (like most I'm kind of lazy and looking at 20+ pages
doesn't do much for me).

However, if you find the setup you want to use, you simply
skip to that section in the manual and follow the approx 19 steps and installation is done. I'm
guessing most people here want to use the printer as a wireless connection. Simply go to that
section and follow the instructions.

The main thing is to set it up via an ethernet
line first and then disconnect the wire when the instructions tell you to do so. It is easy to
follow. I connected it to a Windows XP machine initially but once I was done with the setup I went
into my other room and had my MacBook Pro look for another printer, it was found, drivers were
loaded and I printed a test page. No other drivers needed to be installed on the Macbook (drivers
were installed on the initial configuration XP machine).

I'm guessing most of the
complaints about the wireless setup are due to people not following the directions. READ THE MANUAL.
It only takes a few minutes (probably 5 tops).

Summary: NOT plug and play!!!
Comment: In this day and age of plug-and-play devices this printer has the worst setup I have ever seen. It
requires you to change many arcane settings in your wireless network in order to make the printer
work, and the 32 page manual advises you that if you don't know how to do this you should contact
your network administrator.
This company has no business distributing a printer for consumers
with this type of setup.
I was not even able to get this printer working with a normal cable,
and it is going on eBay because I waited too long to return it.
I am extremely unhappy with
this purchase and I'm also extremely unhappy with brother support which I was not able to get on the
phone.
YMMV

Summary: Tip for buyers of refurbished Brother HL-2170W
Comment: I bought this printer on Amazon as a 'refurbished' model. In my experience with buying electronics,
refurbished almost always means an unused open-box return from a customer (no manufacturer is going
to actually refurbish/repair an item at this price point.) The printer I received showed no signs
of use but when setting up the wireless connection I found an interesting hint about it's history:
it wouldn't connect to the wireless network because it already had an IP address in memory. My
guess is someone tried to set up the wireless, got frustrated and returned it. The day was saved
when a search turned up this excellent tutorial from Brother on resetting the wireless network card:
[...] Once this gem was found, setup took less than 5 minutes for 2 computers and is functioning
flawlessly.

Summary: Brother HL-2170W Printer
Comment: This printer was a breeze to setup and works great. I installed it on 3 Windows computers and 1 Mac
in less than 30-minutes. The USB connection on a desktop with Vista Business installed with no
problems. The remaining computers are all notebooks with Windows 7 wireless and the MacBook Pro was
a wireless connection. I use a Netgear Wireless N AP and used the push button setup. This printer
is a replacement to a Brother HL-1440 printer that was about 3-years old. The HL-1440 was working
great but did not have wireless, so I upgraded.

Overall this is great printer and the
setup was among the easiest I have ever encountered.
